Cutting your step hair at home is a good way to save some money, and learn a new skill. However, it can also turn into a disaster if you do not take the proper steps, or have an idea of what you are doing. Hair stylists are required to take classes, and get licensed; they do not cut hair nilly willy, rather, they follow a procedure they learned. So, you can’t just expect to make a few cuts here and there and get the perfect haircut. Instead you have to follow a few tips. If you want the perfect haircut for a man, child or anyone consider the following steps:

When looking to get a short even length all over, use clippers; you can’t get evenly cut hair all over using some scissors. So, using a #2 or #3 guard on the back and sides of the hair for men is best. You can blend it as you go up, but start by evenly trimming the back and sides.

When cutting men’s hair use clippers to trim as much as half way up the back of the head. Then switch to a blending guard, or use scissors to blend the rest of the hair. Determine how long you want the top of the hair to be, and then blend it down to the length that you trimmed the side and back. For women’s hair, be sure to section it off and cut one section at a time.
When cutting the hair, it is best if it is clean and damp. Then use a comb to help you make an even cut, but cut it vertically, rather than horizontally, this will help you avoid any lines in the hair. By cutting in vertical lines, you avoid having distinct cut lines in the hair, and make for a smoother blend. If you pull the hair through the comb or your fingers horizontally, you will leave a line, making it obvious that you made the cut, and are not professional.

trimming around the ears, you want to make sure that you use clippers to get the basics, but then use scissors to do the finer trimmings. You will want to use your finger to bend the ear down, and get good access to trim the hair. It is not a difficult step, but will help make your haircut look perfect!
